World Athletics today rolled out an AI‑powered analytics platform set to accompany the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing. The tool, developed with a team of data scientists, promises to deliver real‑time predictions and deeper context for each event.
How It Works
For every discipline, machine‑learning models simulate the competition 10,000 times, drawing on more than three million historical results. By incorporating athlete statistics—world ranking, personal bests, season’s bests and recent form—the system estimates likely outcomes for each participant.
"With this technology we can answer key questions fans ask: who is the favourite, what performance will secure a podium finish, and which moments could change the race," said a World Athletics spokesperson.
What It Means for Fans
The platform offers predictions on medal probabilities, expected times or distances, and even identifies potential upsets. During simulations, users can see how often each athlete is projected to win gold, silver or bronze.
Looking Ahead
World Athletics plans to refine the models as new data arrives, aiming to provide increasingly accurate forecasts for future championships.
