AI's Biggest Bet: OpenAI Closes Record $110 Billion Funding Round
San Francisco — OpenAI has secured a staggering $110 billion in private funding, marking what experts are calling one of the largest private capital raises in corporate history. The deal includes significant investments from tech industry giants Amazon, Nvidia, and SoftBank, setting a new benchmark for the artificial intelligence sector in 2026.
The Investment Breakdown
The funding structure reveals the feverish pace of AI investment in the current market. Amazon leads with a $50 billion investment, while Nvidia and SoftBank each contribute $30 billion. This brings OpenAI's pre-money valuation to an unprecedented $730 billion.
"We're entering a new phase where frontier AI moves from research into daily use at global scale," OpenAI stated in its announcement. "Leadership will be defined by who can scale infrastructure fast enough to meet demand, and turn that capacity into products people rely on."
Amazon's Strategic Partnership
Alongside the financial commitment, Amazon has announced a groundbreaking multi-year strategic partnership with OpenAI. The two companies will develop custom AI models that will power Amazon's consumer-facing applications across its vast e-commerce and cloud platforms.
"We are entering a new phase where frontier AI moves from research into daily use at global scale," OpenAI said in a company blog post.
"AI is going to happen everywhere. It's transforming the whole economy, and the world needs a lot of collective computing power to meet the demand," said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on CNBC's "Squawk Box".
Nvidia and Compute Infrastructure
The Nvidia partnership is equally significant, with the company committing to use 3GW of dedicated inference capacity and 2GW of training on Vera Rubin systems. This infrastructure agreement underscores the critical importance of computing power in the AI race.
Market Impact and Competition
This funding comes at a time of intensifying competition. OpenAI's previous round closed in March 2025, raising $40 billion against a $300 billion valuation. At the time, it was the largest private funding round on record.
ChatGPT now boasts more than 900 million weekly active users and over 50 million consumer subscribers. The company's Codex, its cloud-based software engineering agent available to paid ChatGPT subscribers, has seen weekly users triple to 1.6 million since the start of 2026.
The Road Ahead
OpenAI stated that the round remains open, with more investors expected to join. The company anticipates launching a mega-IPO later in 2026, though the timing remains flexible. The $35 billion contingent investment from Amazon will arrive "in the coming months when certain conditions are met."
