Moldova’s political leadership has signaled that the country is ready to move into the next stage of its long‑term goal: joining the European Union. On March 1, Vice‑Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gerasimova confirmed that technical talks would soon begin after her recent visit to Brussels.

Key Developments

The announcement follows a series of meetings between Moldovan officials and EU representatives. Gerasimova highlighted the progress made in aligning Moldova’s laws with European standards, especially in three key areas: the internal market, external relations and judicial reform.

«This stage marks the end of the initial phase of negotiations on all six thematic groups within the accession process,» she said. «We expect to reach a conclusion on the remaining clusters soon.»

European Context

The timing comes as the European Union prepares for its own enlargement talks, with several candidate countries in line. Brussels has welcomed Moldova’s readiness, noting that the country has made significant strides since it applied for accession in 2020.

Domestic Implications

Domestically, the move signals a shift from political rhetoric to concrete policy action. The Moldovan parliament will need to adopt further reforms and harmonize legislation with EU directives before formal negotiations can commence.

Future Outlook

While the exact schedule for technical talks remains to be confirmed, experts say Moldova could enter formal accession discussions within the next few weeks. The country’s leadership hopes that a swift start will strengthen its position on the European stage and accelerate economic integration.
