Prime Minister Munteanu Announces Emergency Energy Measures
The Government of the Republic of Moldova has formally declared a state of alert in the energy sector for a period of 60 days, effective from March 4, 2026. This decisive preventive measure was approved during an emergency session of the Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu.
The decision was based on comprehensive risk analysis conducted by the National Crisis Management Center, which identified significant vulnerabilities in energy supply routes and security protocols amid the ongoing conflict in the Persian Gulf.
"We have been closely monitoring what is happening in the Persian Gulf. We understood that this is a major crisis, a war whose duration we do not know, and we took the first actions as early as Saturday. The first measure was to think about the security of the state and the security of our citizens abroad," stated Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu.
Energy prices have already begun rising globally, with supply routes shifting due to the conflict. Moldova's economy, which remains sensitive to external energy shocks, requires careful management to ensure stability.
Protecting Energy Security and State Vital Functions
According to the Government, the state of alert was introduced to:
- Prevent disruptions in the energy sector's functioning
- Protect vital functions of the state
- Ensure security of energy supply
- Mitigate potential cascading effects from global market volatility
"We must approach any crisis with professionalism, seriousness, lucidity, with clear and cool heads. We must not panic; we need to react professionally, which is what we are trying to do and are already doing," the Prime Minister added.
The Prime Minister emphasized avoiding speculation and using this situation to consolidate rather than create division within the country.
International Cooperation and Preparedness
Prime Minister Munteanu assured that professionals are working together with international partners to take proportional decisions and avoid escalating the situation. The Government activated its security protocols and is coordinating with all relevant ministries and agencies.
"We are trying to take decisions proportional to the situation, to avoid escalating it, to avoid disproportionate situations and all kinds of speculation," Munteanu declared. "This is an opportunity for consolidation; we must help one another. This is not the time to use this crisis for all sorts of declarative and speculative purposes."
