Energy prices continue to climb in Moldova — the National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE) has confirmed new fuel tariffs effective as of March 4, 2026. While gasoline (AI-95) now stands at 23.97 lei per liter, diesel fuel has reached 21.21 lei, representing incremental increases that have been accumulating throughout the month.

The Gradual Rise

According to the official tariff schedule published on the NRATI website, the gradual price escalation began at least on February 17. At that time, AI-95 was priced at 23.34 lei per liter, while diesel was at 20.16 lei. In less than a month, diesel prices have risen by over one leu.

Regional Context and Outlook

These price adjustments should not be directly linked to recent Middle Eastern events, according to analysts. However, experts warn that the ongoing hostilities and blockade of the Strait of Hormuz could trigger a sharp increase in fuel prices globally, potentially affecting Moldova as well.

"It is better to fill up a full tank today, it will not be cheaper for sure," — experts caution consumers.

The situation remains closely monitored by the Moldovan government and energy sector. As of March 4, the daily increase for diesel was approximately 0.34 lei, while gasoline increased by 0.13 lei compared to March 3.

Implications for the Economy

Energy prices account for approximately 70% of external market dependence, according to economist assessments. This makes Moldova particularly vulnerable to global volatility, with inflationary pressure transmitted through transportation, agriculture, and manufacturing costs.

For consumers, the advice remains clear: fill up today rather than tomorrow, when prices are certain to rise further.
