The European Commission has launched a new round of public consultations aimed at shaping the Union’s climate policy framework for the period after 2030. The initiative, announced on February 9, 2026, invites citizens, businesses and civil‑society organisations to submit proposals that will help define national targets and flexibilities within the EU’s broader climate strategy.

How the Consultation Works

Participants can access a dedicated portal where they will find detailed background information on the European Climate Law, the Green Deal, and the proposed post‑2030 framework. The portal allows stakeholders to download templates for proposals, submit written comments, and participate in live webinars hosted by climate experts.

Key Areas of Focus

The consultations will cover several priority areas:

  • National climate targets and flexibilities – how individual Member States can set ambitious yet realistic goals.
  • International carbon credit mechanisms – legal frameworks for using international credits to meet the 2040 EU climate law target.
  • Funding pathways – strategies to mobilise public and private finance for climate projects.
  • Stakeholder engagement – ensuring that local, regional and sectoral actors are represented in policy design.

Quotes from the Commission

"The EU’s future climate success depends on inclusive dialogue and concrete action plans. We want to hear every voice that can help us build a resilient, low‑carbon Europe," says Commissioner for Climate Action.

Stakeholders are encouraged to submit their input by March 31, 2026, after which the Commission will review submissions and publish a summary of key recommendations in early summer. The outcomes will inform the drafting of new legislative proposals aimed at tightening carbon budgets, enhancing renewable energy deployment, and improving climate resilience across Member States.
