Danika Mason, one of Australia's most prominent sports reporters, has issued a heartfelt apology after a viral clip of her slurred delivery during the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina went around social media.

The Channel Nine reporter stumbled over her words, confusing iguanas with the price of coffee in Italy while reporting on the day's sports events. With glazed eyes, she mixed up the UK and US, while studio host Karl Stefanovic could be heard laughing in the background.

"I want to take full responsibility, it's not the standard I set myself," Mason said during another appearance a day later, adding that she was "embarrassed".

She blamed several factors for her on-screen lapse: "I shouldn't have had a drink, especially in these conditions, it's cold, we've got altitude, and not having had dinner probably didn't help as well".

Political and public reactions were mixed.

Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he was "pro-Danika" and that there was "nothing to see here" suggesting she had been affected by jet lag, while some viewers called for her to be "sacked on the spot" for unprofessional conduct.

Australian PM Anthony Albanese weighed in on the controversy: "Pro-Danika. Nothing to see here. I'm not sure about the iguanas, where are we going with that one?"

Following the viral episode, Mason returned to the Today show on Thursday morning and asked viewers for patience: "I want to take a moment, if that's OK, just to apologise." She expressed gratitude for messages of concern and acknowledged her embarrassment.

Studio host Jayne Azzopardi responded warmly: "We know how hard you work, Danika," while Stefanovic called her "a legend".

Mason, best known for her National Rugby League coverage, had been working the Winter Olympics live cross when the incident occurred, a high-stakes environment demanding absolute professional composure.
