Flight Disruptions Leave Tourists at the Mercy of Regional Chaos

As of March 2026, more than 150 Moldovan citizens find themselves stranded across the volatile Middle East region, unable to return home following widespread airline cancellations and airspace restrictions imposed in the wake of escalating international tensions.

The affected tourists have been impacted across multiple destinations, including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Israel, the Maldives, Tanzania, and other countries in the region.

APIT Seeks Government Intervention

"APIT has submitted an official request to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova, asking it to designate an operational contact point to coordinate cases involving organized tourists, provide periodic updates on airspace restrictions and possible repatriation measures,"
the Tourism Industry Employers' Association of Moldova (APIT) stated in their official communication.

The association has remained in constant contact with tour operators and is closely monitoring the situation developments as regional tensions continue to evolve.

Recommendations for Affected Citizens

APIT has issued the following recommendations for tourists currently in the affected areas:

  • Stay in constant contact with travel agencies and airlines to monitor flight status updates
  • Regularly check air traffic restrictions and airspace closures
  • Register with the diplomatic missions of the Republic of Moldova for consular protection
  • Avoid non-essential travel while regional airspace restrictions remain in effect

The situation remains fluid, with authorities working to establish a rapid mechanism to centralize information and initiate appropriate crisis management protocols for repatriation operations.
